In September 2011, we were blessed to find this little fixer-upper of a farm on 5 acres on the Fairfield Bench in Montana! And although it has come with a lot of challenges (as most old homesteads do!) we are so grateful for our little piece of land, the fertile soils, and our own corner of Cottonwoods. Our first step towards building our homestead was acquiring two Jersey cows, Oatie and Loretta, who carry the heritage A2 genetics. Cows who are A2 lack the modern commercial Beta Casein A1 gene, therefore making their milk consumable by many of those with dairy sensitivities. Shortly following the milk cows, heritage Red Wattle pigs were added to our growing family farm, followed by Nigerian Dwarf goats. I (Jessie) started making goat milk soap for our family in 2015, followed by goat milk lotion and other natural products in 2017. Today, Sweet Prairie Farm not only offers homemade natural goat milk and tallow products but is also dedicated to raising heritage livestock and promoting natural agricultural biodiversity, humane animal husbandry, and a sustainable farm-to-table Montana lifestyle.
Our goal and hope for Sweet Prairie Farm is consistent with the old homestead motto of generations past: grow and raise what our family needs and sell our surplus. Each of our animals is a precious and important part of our farm family (almost all of them have names!) and we look forward to the opportunity to share them with you! We are grateful to have stewardship of a small piece of God's creation and take that responsibility seriously. It is a privilege to live in Montana, and a blessing to be able to work hard with our hands, to bless our family and bless others. With love from our farm to your family, Josh, Jessie, Claira, Emma, Samuel, Jackson, and Leah Bidlack |
